Dual Polarity Regulated Power Supply

The circuit design of this dual polarity power supply is regulated with the use of a positive (78xx) and negative (79xx) voltage regulators.

Dual polarity power supply are created mostly to power up operational amplifier circuits and other circuits that require dual supply voltage. The voltage is adjustable, requires a few parts, and easy to build. The circuit utilizes 7815 regulator for the positive supply while 7915 voltage regulator for the negative supply.

The monolithic IC 7815 positive voltage regulator is designed for use in several ways of applications including on board regulation. It makes use of internal current limiting, safe area compensation and thermal shutdown. It can produce output currents in excess of 1 Amp with enough heat sinking. It can be used with external components to obtain flexible voltages and currents, although it is designed primarily as a fixed voltage regulator. The negative voltage regulator 7915 employs the same features as with 7815 which makes it also notably rough for any operating conditions.

The rating of the transformer’s primary depends on the region of the supplied voltage. To allow losses on both regulators, the secondary coil should be 18 volts at 1 amp rating. Since the circuit might operate under 120, 220 or 240 volts, it’s a prerequisite for the circuit to be enclosed in a case where fans or heat sinks were usually required.

Parts of the UPS Uninterruptible Power Supply

Uninterruptible Power Supply
UPS is basically composed of three main components, namely:
1) Rectifier-Charger
This section is used to transfer circuit and battery charging. Rectifier-charger circuit block is going to supply the power needed by the inverter under full load and at that time to maintain the charge in the battery. Besides these blocks must have the ability to drain the power output of 125-130%.

Characteristics of the batteries also need to be taken into account in its charger circuit design because if a rechargeable battery with a current that exceeds the capacity limit will be able to shorten the life of the battery. Usually for a battery charging current to the UPS is 80% of current conditions issued by the batteries at full load.
Limitation of a UPS system is good by the standards of NEMA - National
Electical Manufacturer Association - is able to provide 100% power continuously (continuous load) and 2 hours at 125% load without a decrease in performance (damage). The battery can still be categorized as unfit for use if the condition is still capable of providing 100% power for 1 hour if the time of filling for 8 hours (determined by the manufacturing
battery).

2) Inverter
The quality of the inverter is a determinant of the quality of power generated by a UPS system. Inverter function to change the DC voltage of the rectifier-charger circuit into AC voltage signal in the form of a sine wave formation and after going through the filter circuit. The resulting output voltage must be stable both voltage amplitude and frequency, low distortion, there are no voltage transients.
In addition, the inverter system needs a feedback circuit (feedback) and the regulator circuit to maintain constant voltage to be obtained.

3) Switch Shifters (Transfer switches)
Transfer switch is divided into two types, namely electromechanical and static. Electromechanical switch uses relays to get one of the supply voltage terminal and the other from the UPS system. Static switch system using semiconductor components, such as SCR.
The use of SCR would be better because of the removal operation is performed with the SCR takes only 3 to 4 ms, while the electromechanical switch is about 50 to 100 ms.
The use of UPS is done by connecting the UPS to the AC input and output PLN UPS to the load. Most UPS are used to supply the computer, because if the source of PLN suddenly dies, then the data being processed is not lost but is still in the back-up by UPS, so theres still time to save data.

2V to 25V Power Supply Schematic

2V to 25 Power supply
This project makes use of a LM338 adjustable three terminal regulator to supply a current of up to 5A over a variable output voltage of 2V to 25V DC. It will come in handy to power up lots of electronic circuits when you are assembling or building any electronic devices. The schematic and parts list are designed for a power supply input of 240VAC. Change the ratings of the parts if 110VAC power supply input is necessary.

As shown in the figure above, the mains input is applied to the circuit through fuse F1. The fuse will blow if a current greater than 8A is applied to the method. Varistor V1 is used to clamp down any surge of voltage from the mains to protect the parts from breakdown. Transformer T1 is used to step down the incoming voltage to 24V AC where it is rectified by the diodes D1, D2, D3 & D4. Electrolytic capacitor E1 is used to smoothen the ripple of the rectified DC voltage.

Diodes D5 & D6 are used as a protection devices to prevent capacitors E2 & E3 from discharging through low current points in to the regulator. Capacitor C1 is used to bypass high frequency part from the circuit. Make definite that a large heat sink is mounted to LM338 to transfer the heat generated to the atmosphere.

Soft Start For Switching Power Supply

Switching power supply whose output voltage is appreciably lower than its input voltage has an interesting property: the current drawn by it is smaller than its output current. However, the input power (UI) is, of course, greater than the output power. There is another aspect that needs to be watched: when the input voltage at switch-on is too low, the regulator will tend to draw the full current. When the supply cannot cope with this, it fails or the fuse blows. It is, therefore, advisable to disable the regulator at switch-on (via the on/off input). until the relevant capacitor has been charged. When the regulator then starts to draw current, the charging current has already dropped to a level which does not overload the voltage source.

Circuit diagram:

Soft
Soft Start Circuit For Switching Power Supply

The schema in the diagram provides an output voltage of 5 V and is supplied by a 24 V source. The regulator need not be disabled until the capacitor is fully charged: when the potential across the capacitor has reached a level of half or more of the input voltage, all is well. This is why the zener diode in the diagram is rated at 15 V. Many regulators produced by National Semiconductor have an integral on/off switch, and this is used in the present schema. The input is intended for TTL signals, and usually consists of a transistor whose base is accessible externally. This means that a higher switching voltage may be applied via a series resistor: the value of this in the present schema is 22 kΩ. When the voltage across the capacitor reaches a level of about 17 V, transistor T1 comes on, whereupon the regulator is enabled.

Mains Supply Failure Alarm Wiring diagram Schematic

Whenever AC mains supply fails, this schema alerts you by sounding an alarm. It also provides a backup light to help you find your way to the torch or the generator key in the dark. The schema is powered directly by a 9V PP3/6F22 compact battery. Pressing of switch S1 provides the 9V power supply to the schema. A red LED (LED2), in conjunction with zener diode ZD1 (6V), is used to indicate the battery power level.

Resistor R9 limits the operating current (and hence the brightness) of LED2. When the battery voltage is 9V, LED2 glows with full intensity. As the battery voltage goes below 8V, the intensity of LED2 decreases and it glows very dimly. LED2 goes off when the battery voltage goes below 7.5V. Initially, in standby state, both the LEDs are off and the buzzer does not sound. The 230V AC mains is directly fed to mains-voltage detection optocoupler IC MCT2E (IC1) via resistors R1, R2 and R3, bridge rectifier BR1 and capacitor C1.

Illumination of the LED inside optocoupler IC1 activates its internal phototransistor and clock input pin 12 of IC2 (connected to 9V via N/C contact of relay RL1) is pulled low. Note that only one monostable of dual-monostable multivibrator IC CD4538 (IC2) is used here. When mains goes off, IC2 is triggered after a short duration determined by components C1, R4 and C3. Output pin 10 of IC2 goes high to forward bias relay driver transistor T1 via resistor R7.

Circuit diagram:

Mains
Mains Supply Failure Alarm Circuit Diagram

Relay RL1 energises to activate the piezo buzzer via its N/O contact for the time-out period of the monostable multivibrator (approximately 17 minutes). At the same time, the N/C contact removes the positive supply to resistor R4. The time-out period of the monostable multivibrator is determined by R5 and C2. Simultaneously, output pin 9 of IC2 goes low and pnp transistor T2 gets forward biased to light up the white LED (LED1).

Light provided by this back-up LED is sufficient to search the torch or generator key. During the mono time-out period, the schema can be switched off by opening switch S1. The ‘on’ period of the monostable multivibrator may be changed by changing the value of resistor R5 or capacitor C2. If mains doesn’t resume when the ‘on’ period of the monostable lapses, the timer is retriggered after a short delay determined by resistor R4 and C3.

Top Bench Power supply Wiring diagram Schematic

This is the Top Bench Power supply Circuit Diagram. A tapped transformer drives a diode bridge (D1-D4) and two 2500 µ¥ filter capacitors (Cl and C2), that provide a no-load voltage of 37 or 47 volts, depending upon the position of switch S2a. The unregulated dc is then fed to a pre-regulator stage composed of Ql and D5.

Those components protect IC1 (the 723) from an over-voltage condition; the 723 cant handle more than 40 volts. The LED (LED1) and its 2.2 k current-limiting resistor (Rl) provide on/off indication. The current through the LED varies slightly according to the transformer tap selected, but thats of no real consequence.

Variable Power Supply LM317

A truly timeless schema. LM317 is a versatile and highly efficient 1.2-37V voltage regulator that can provide up to 1.5A of current with a large heat sink. Its ideal for just about any application. This was my first workbench power supply and I still use it. Variable Power Supply Circuit diagram : Since LM317 is protected against short-schema, no fuse is necessary. Thanks to automatic thermal shutdown, it will turn off if heating excessively. All in all, a very powerful (and affordable!) package, indeed. Although LM317 is capable of delivering up to 37V, the schema pictured here is limited to 25V for the sake of safety and simplicity. Any higher output voltage would require additional components and a larger heat sink. Make sure that the input voltage is at least a couple of Volts higher than the desired output. Its ok to use a trimmer if youre building a fixed-voltage supply. Problems : Follow all the safety precautions when working with mains voltage. Insulate all connections on the transformer. Possible uses :

Variable workbench power supply, fixed-voltage supply... Just about any possible application when no more than 1.5A is necessary.
